India is working on a bunch of nuclear projects in both the civil and military sectors. Here are some of the upcoming nuclear projects we can expect to see:
at Kudankulam Nuclear power plant - India, and Russia are working together on a joint venture to build a nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu. It's a two-reactor project with a capacity of 1,000 MW each, and the construction of units 3 and 4 is underway.
Gorakhpur Hrayana anu vidut pariyojna (GHVAP), India is building a 2-3,700 MW pressurised heavy water reactor called the GHAVP. Construction of units 1 and 2 is underway.
And at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, India is working on a 500 MW fast reactor called the PFBR (Prototype fast breedar Reactor), which is the first Indian-designed and built FBR and is in the last stages of commissioning.
The advanced heavy water reactor (AHWR) is a 300 megawatt (MW) PHWR project currently being developed at the Bhabha atomics research centre (BARC), Mumbai. The advanced heavy water reactor is a next-generation reactor with several safety features. India is a party to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) and runs its nuclear power program under the protection of the IAEA. It is important to note that the nuclear power program of India is managed by the nuclear power corporation of India, NPCIL, which designs, builds, and operates nuclear power plants.
